Carhartt Work In Progress (WIP), a European evolution of American heritage brand Carhartt, is the latest major retailer to announce a move to King’s Cross: it will open a 2,500 sq ft store on King’s Boulevard in September 2017, designed by multidisciplinary design agency Faye Toogood.
Carhartt WIP will be the third retailer to open on King’s Boulevard so far, joining Nike Central (a global first for their new concept) which opened in August last year and British fashion retailer Jigsaw, set to open a new store in Three Pancras Square shortly. The remaining units on King’s Boulevard are also under offer, with further brand announcements to follow.
Carhartt WIP joins a retail collective focussing on fashion, lifestyle, and food and beverage operators, and signposts the start of the district’s retail evolution; becoming a destination for an interesting line-up of both iconoclastic, and more accessible brands.
Annual footfall on King’s Boulevard is estimated at 18 million people by 2019. Autumn next year will see the opening of the main concentration of retail at king’s Cross, Coal Drops Yard – London’s newest shopping destination – 100,000 sq ft for up to 65 shops, a major restaurant and numerous cafes, all together in historic former industrial buildings reinvented by Heatherwick Studio.
Carhartt WIP’s core offer on King’s Boulevard will be the brands iconic and contemporary clothing and accessories, paying tribute to its original inception 120 years ago in Detroit; it will also be the go to Carhartt WIP location for collaborative and special products, available only at King’s Cross.
The specially designed store will have a modular layout, enabling the space to move and adapt to a changing retail campaign, designed by designer Faye Toogood, best known for her eye catching furniture design and exhibitions for the likes of Hermès, Somerset House and Mahani, Dubai’s first concept store.
Craig White, Project Director, Argent, said,
“Iconic King’s Cross is one of London’s most vibrant, energetic and dynamic neighbourhoods right now, and the retail element is the next layer to be revealed. We are hand picking important and influential brands whom can express their stories, through dynamic store design that incorporates their digital world, fresh approaches to visual merchandizing innovation, and collaborations and links to art and culture, and who will offer enriching shopping experiences, to both national and international visitors.”
More details of the interior design and the opening events programme will be revealed shortly. The provisional opening date is September 2017.
