Who is Emily Carter?
Emily Carter is a British designer based in London, specialising in luxury silk scarves and pocket squares. Emily is a Made in Arts London artist and will be trading at Canopy Market as part of a partnership with MiAL this weekend.
The collections incorporate themes from natural history, flora, fauna and scientific illustration to create surreal and unique illustrations and prints. Each scarf and square begins as a detailed original drawing, with experiments in colour and composition leading to the finished design. The products are printed on high quality silk twill, and are hemmed and packaged by hand.
How did you start your market stall?
I began my business after university when I launched my first collection of scarves. There was an immediate interest in the products, so in time it flourished into a successful business.
Any interesting facts about what you sell?
The products are all hand illustrated (by me) and made by hand in England. The collections are not seasonal, and are designed to be timeless.
What is most rewarding about trading?
Seeing others wear my designs and want to purchase my work is a very rewarding feeling. I particularly enjoy the talks and mentoring that I do as a result of the business, as well as exhibiting at trade-shows such as LFW.
Who is your ‘typical’ customer?
My typical customer is in her mid-30s, and works within the creative sector. She doesn’t buy into fast fashion, and prefers to purchase luxury, one off items which are made to last a lifetime.
To shop Emily Carter, visit the Canopy Market, trading from Friday 25th 10am-6pm, Saturday 26th 10am-4pm, Sunday 27th 10am-4pm, at King’s Cross.
