Enrolling friends or family in one of the culinary classes at the new King’s Cross Waitrose Cookery School is the perfect Christmas present.

There’s something for everyone as we found out when we caught up with Lucy Hawkes, who works in King’s Cross and recently learnt how to make Thai red seafood curry.

If you want a twist on dining out, we thoroughly recommend you try an evening class at the Waitrose Cookery School.

Upon arrival, you are greeted with a friendly smile and a glass of bubbles. After you’ve settled into your surroundings and have met your fellow classmates, Chef Russell draws you around the demonstration table. He takes you through the themed recipe, in this case a Thai Red Seafood Currry, step by step. Not only do you learn how to create a kick-ass curry, but you also pick up some neat tips and tricks along the way – best way to cut a lime, peel (scrape!) ginger… anyone?

His increasingly salivating demonstration is finally punctuated by a much-anticipated tasting… It’s obviously very important for you to know what your dishes should taste like!  

When you get to your cooking station, all the ingredients, tools and state-of-the art kitchen equipment is laid out on sparkly kitchen tops (£500 blenders, next to ovens only otherwise seen in the Great British Bake Off!).

In pairs, you replicate Chef Russell’s moves, whilst he and his staff pop up now and then, discreetly saving your rice from ‘burndom’ and calmly guiding you towards success.

Whilst you’re putting the finishing touches on your dish, the Waitrose team are washing up, laying tables and setting out matching wines, so that you can taste your masterpiece in all its glory. Time to sit back, relax, compare cooking notes and make new friends. £25 well spent, I’d say!
