Winter Sun is here. The ‘hearth’-like artwork and public space is now open in Granary Square.

Inspired by our need for light in the darkness of winter, Winter Sun is a place to gather together in a temporary structure of ever-changing light.

The endlessly dimming and brightening social space is encircled by twelve glowing ‘suns’ emulating natural light. Some suns approximate daylight, others continuously simulate daybreak, and those in darkened corridors – like moons – are illuminated using recorded light from around the structure projected back into the space.

The social space at the heart of the installation is open from 10am Monday to Saturday and serves warming drinks and snacks. You’ll find fine teas, coffee from around the world and specialist hot and cold cocktails with locally-sourced ingredients such as honey, horseradish and winter fruits. High-quality ales, lagers and ciders are also available, including award-winning Hallets and 21 Guns American IPA, as well as traditional British pies, scotch eggs and sausage rolls. The design of the bar, down to the lighting and staff uniforms, is all part of the creative concept, referencing sunlight and created using exposed light-sensitive materials.

Winter Sun has been commissioned by King’s Cross and is a collaboration between artists James Bowthorpe and Kim Coleman, with architect Andrew Lock.

Taking inspiration from the technology we humans use to avoid darkness at this time of year, Winter Sun is a circular structure, 5 metres high by 18 metres wide, that will stand among the trees of Granary Square.

A series of free events are running concurrently with the installation – no booking is required, just come down and enjoy.
