Naked Not Nude

A play inspired by the short life of one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century

Tuesday 20th March 2018 - Friday 23rd March 2018

Third-year Central Saint Martin’s drama students in a thought-provoking performance

‘How far should an artist’s life taint their work?’

To mark the centenary of Austrian artist Egon Schiele’s untimely death, third year BA Acting students present Naked not Nude.

Written and directed by Anthony Clark, the play is inspired by the short life and work of one of the greatest painters and draughtsmen of the twentieth century, the Austrian Artist, Egon Schiele. Uncompromising, rude and brilliant, he sought to undermine the hypocrisy of Viennese society’s attitude towards art, sex, war and death.

Rich in humour, polemic and tragedy, the drama is an evocative, fictionalised, epic exploration of the major events that shaped Egon Schiele’s life: his relationship with his family; his antagonism toward the artistic establishment; his intense love for his female models, and one in particular; his alleged abduction and rape of a young girl; the wretched time he spent in prison for showing immoral drawings to children, the premature death of his wife and his own death aged 28.

Naked Not Nude challenges us to consider and assess our own attitudes towards what it is to be truly human, and whether the compromises we make in the interests of society do little more than privilege some whilst oppressing others.
