Carhartt Work In Progress (WIP), a European evolution of American heritage brand Carhartt, opened at King’s Cross on Friday 24 November. The 2,500 sq ft Special Projects store is the fourth retailer to open on King’s Boulevard so far, joining Nike Central, Jigsaw, and one-stop international styling destination & Other Stories.
Carhartt WIP joins a retail collective focussing on fashion, lifestyle, and food and beverage operators, and signposts the start of the district’s retail evolution; becoming a destination for an interesting line-up of both iconoclastic, and more accessible brands.
Annual footfall on King’s Boulevard is estimated at 18 million people by 2019. Autumn next year will see the opening of the main concentration of retail at king’s Cross, Coal Drops Yard – London’s newest shopping destination – 100,000 sq ft for up to 65 shops, a major restaurant and numerous cafes, all together in historic former industrial buildings reinvented by Heatherwick Studio.
Carhartt WIP’s core offer on King’s Boulevard is the brands iconic and contemporary clothing and accessories. Paying tribute to its original inception 120 years ago in Detroit; it is also the go to Carhartt WIP location for collaborative and special products, available only at King’s Cross.
Created by renowned London-based design studio Faye Toogood, the space provides a conceptual look at Carhartt WIP’s roots in honest labour, exposing the inner mechanisms of many of the fixtures and utilizing simple but hardwearing materials, ranging from raw concrete to duck brown canvas.
The space also features a custom built coffee bar, operated in partnership with renowned coffee roasters Allpress,
