Black Maria

A major new commission by Richard Wentworth & GRUPPE

Black Maria was a major commission by the British artist Richard Wentworth working in collaboration with GRUPPE, an emerging Swiss architectural practice. For four weeks the Black Maria timber structure inhabited the remarkable atrium which joins the historic Granary Building with the new central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.

Named after Edison’s film studio, Black Maria turned the shed which captured the first moving images, into an auditorium where passers-by are invited to develop their own uses and purposes. During the day, Black Maria acted as a public space, into which one can freely walk, work and rest. At night, doors become screens, stairs double up as seats, as Black Maria turned into a space for discussions and screenings.

Black Maria was supported by Arts Council England and King’s Cross Central Limited Partnership.

Black Maria is part of Relay, a three-year art programme curated by Michael Pinsky and Stéphanie Delcroix and fully funded by the King’s Cross Central Limited Partnership.

Each evening of the week Black Maria will host different users - for more information on the programme or to find out how to book tickets please click here
